A comprehensive guide to Daming Palace Heritage Park, the grandest palace complex of the Tang Dynasty.
Daming Palace Heritage Park (大明宫国家遗址公园) is the ruins of the grandest palace complex in Chinese history, covering 3.2 square kilometers. Once the imperial seat of power for 17 Tang Dynasty emperors over 220 years, it was the political and cultural center of the Tang Empire. The palace was destroyed by war at the end of the Tang Dynasty, but its archaeological remains offer a glimpse into its former magnificence.
The park now features archaeological exhibits, reconstructed buildings, and beautiful landscaped grounds that showcase the scale and grandeur of the original palace. Key attractions include the reconstructed Danfeng Gate, the Hanyuan Hall ruins, and the IMAX theater showing documentaries about Tang Dynasty court life. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Silk Roads network.
Danfeng Gate Ruins Museum (丹凤门遗址博物馆) — The reconstructed main southern gate of the palace. Beneath the rebuilt gate structure lie the authentic Tang Dynasty gate foundations, preserved and brought to life with light-and-shadow technology showcasing ancient architectural techniques.
Hanyuan Hall Ruins (含元殿遗址) — The main audience hall of Daming Palace, equivalent to the Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing's Forbidden City. Only the massive rammed-earth foundation remains today, yet its sheer scale still evokes the grandeur of envoys from every nation paying tribute to the Tang court.
Daming Palace Ruins Museum (大明宫遗址博物馆) — Rich in excavated artifacts, the highlight is a 1:15 scale miniature model of the entire palace complex, offering a sweeping bird's-eye view of the magnificent Tang Dynasty palace ensemble at a glance.
Taiye Pool Ruins (太液池遗址) — The imperial garden lake of the Tang court. With its scenic beauty of water and greenery, it is one of the few spots in the park with natural scenery — and the most photogenic.
