Transportation Overview in China

China boasts one of the most extensive and modern transportation networks in the world, making it relatively easy for travelers to navigate the country. Whether you're traveling between major cities or within urban areas, there are several convenient options available.

Transportation Type/Ticketing Method Description Notes
High-Speed Rail 12306 (Online) Official train ticketing system in China, available both as a website (12306.cn)and a mobile app(12306 App). 1. Tickets can be purchased online or offline up to 15 days in advance (including day of travel). For example, if you plan to travel on May 15th, you can start buying tickets from May 1st.

Offline Purchase Tickets can be purchased at ticket counters or self-service machines at train stations.
Charter Services Charter Teams/Platforms This is currently most convenient way for foreign travelers. Many teams specialize in serving foreign customers, and drivers usually speak English or Mandarin. You can search for "car service" on Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) or WeChat to find official accounts of many teams.

Through Travel Agencies If you already have a domestic travel agency arranging your trip, you can ask them to help book charter services. They often have long-term cooperative teams and can get package services.
Subway Systems Public Transport Extensive, modern subway networks in major Chinese cities, with clean stations and trains. Most systems have English signage and announcements. Fastest way to travel during rush hour. For short distances in non-rush hours, shared bikes are also a good option.
Car Rental Self-Drive Both international and local car rental companies operate throughout China, offering a variety of vehicles to suit different needs. Foreigners need to obtain a Temporary Driving Permit to legally drive in China.

Taxi Services Traditional Taxis Widely available in all cities, can be flagged down on the street or found at taxi stands, have metered fares. 1. Traditional taxis are rarely used by both locals and tourists now.

Ride-hailing Apps (Didi) Didi Chuxing is the most popular ride-hailing app in China, offering convenient and affordable transportation services.
Shared Bikes Mobile App/WeChat mini-program/AliPay Widely available in most Chinese cities, shared bikes offer a convenient way to travel short distances. Users can unlock bikes using mobile apps and pay for usage by the minute or hour. 1. Requires a local mobile number and payment method

Car Rental

Car rental services in China provide travelers with the freedom to explore at their own pace. Both international and local car rental companies operate throughout the country, offering a variety of vehicles to suit different needs. Foreigners can legally drive in China with an Temporary Driving Permit.

Step 1: Obtain Temporary Driving Permit
  • Required Documents(Figure 1):
    1. Passport
    2. Driver's license: Need translation and notarization
    3. Driver's License Translation
    4. 2 recent 1-inch color photos with white background (can be taken at the Vehicle Management Station)
    5. Temporary accommodation certificate (can be provided by police station or hotel)
  • Application Location(Figure 2): Local Vehicle Management Stations
  • Validity Period: The validity period is consistent with the visa stay period. For those staying in China for less than or equal to 3 months, a temporary driving permit with a validity period of 3 months can be applied for; for those staying for more than 3 months, the validity period can be extended to one year.
  • Processing Time: About 2 hours with complete materials
  • Important Reminder:
    1. Temporary Driving Permit can only be used for car rental
    2. Driver's license translation must be done by a qualified translation agency
    3. The temporary driving permit should be carried at all times and used together with the foreign driver's license and its Chinese translation
    4. When driving a rented Chinese motor vehicle, please carry the rental contract with the vehicle for traffic police inspection
    5. Applicants aged 70 or above need to first take a competency test at each driver's theory test center, and can only apply after passing the test (detailed addresses can be found on the Traffic Management 12123 APP)

Step 2: Car Rental and Precautions
  • Rental Platforms: Can choose platforms like "eHi", "Shenzhou Car Rental", "Ctrip Car Rental", or search for "car rental" on Alipay or WeChat to find mini-programs
  • Payment Method: Generally requires an international credit card as deposit
  • Car Rental Insurance: Must confirm the vehicle has full insurance when booking, clarify exemption clauses, sometimes insurance types have different restrictions on area and time
  • Special Reminder: Self-driving in Xinjiang and Tibet
    - If going to Tibet or Xinjiang, control will be stricter, must go through formal channels
    - Border Permit: Individuals cannot freely enter Tibetan areas, need travel agency to apply for entry approval letter in advance
    - Pick-up Process: If there are changes in the itinerary during actual pick-up, must contact the travel agency in advance for processing
    - Monthly Quota: Generally more than one month in advance, must contact the travel agency in advance for processing
  • Vehicle Inspection Process: Must inspect the vehicle's exterior and interior when picking up the car to ensure good condition
  • Highway Fees: In China, highway fees are borne by the driver, usually paid at the exit
  • Traffic Violation Handling: If traffic violations occur during the rental period, need to handle them yourself or entrust the car rental company to handle them

1. Alipay Payment

Tips for Using Subways in China
  • Purchase tickets from vending machines (many accept mobile payments)
  • Keep your ticket until you exit the station
  • Stand on the right side of escalators to allow others to pass on the left
  • Give up seats to elderly, pregnant women, and children
  • Be aware of peak hours (7:30-9:00 AM and 5:30-7:30 PM)
  • Most stations have English signage, but having station names in Chinese is helpful
