Payment Methods Overview

Cash

Chinese Yuan (CNY) is the official currency. While digital payments are prevalent, cash is still accepted in many places, especially in smaller towns and rural areas.

  • Widely accepted in most establishments
  • Exchange locations: Banks (with valid ID), airports, ports, hotels, and authorized exchange centers
  • Exchange limits: Maximum ¥5,000 per day per person; maximum $50,000 per year per person
  • ATMs: Available in most cities, many accept international cards (Visa/Mastercard), but may charge fees
  • Useful tips: Keep small denominations for taxis and small purchases

WeChat Pay

One of the most popular mobile payment methods in China. It's integrated into the WeChat app, which is widely used for messaging and social networking.

  • What you can do: Pay at restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores, markets, and other places that accept WeChat Pay
  • What you can't do: Send red envelopes, purchase wealth management products, or use for cross-border payments
  • Fees: Transactions under ¥200 are free; 3% fee for amounts over ¥200
  • Limits: ¥6,500 per transaction, ¥60,000 per month

Alipay

Another major mobile payment platform in China. It's part of the Alibaba Group and offers a wide range of financial services.

  • What you can do: Scan QR codes for payments at malls, shops, convenience stores, markets, public transportation, and taxis
  • Fees: Transactions under ¥200 are free; 3% fee for amounts over ¥200
  • Limits: Maximum ¥5,000 per transaction for international accounts
